I grew up in East Los Angeles, where the streets were alive — full of color, sound, and movement. My grandmother’s family, the Chavez family, carries generations of LA history. including displacement from Chavez Ravine and residential school survival. Growing up in East Los Angeles my neighborhood felt like a celebration and carts of tamales and paletas vendors ringing their bells and singing out their menu. Before Dodgers games, we'd go to Philippe’s for French dip sandwiches, pickle on the side, sawdust underfoot — walking through life as part of a big, connected family.
